Ardebil or Ardabil carpets are woven in northern Iran, close to the Caspian Sea. The name Ardabil comes from the Zoroastrian holy book Avesta and has the literal meaning of a sacred place. Typical of this type of carpet are the geometric patterns, which are also often found in village and nomadic carpets.

The warp of Ardabil rugs is made mostly of cotton, while the weft is either cotton or wool, yet silk is also used as a weft in fine Ardabil rugs to highlight specific patterns.
