Imperial Kerman

Ref: 3395
This Kerman runner rug from southeast Persia was woven circa 1920s. Kerman runners are extremely rare. This piece features a plain background in cream colour with an intricate border composed of floral motifs set on a crimson red background giving it a contemporary minimalistic design which is even more rare. The rug was woven on a cotton foundation with wool pile using asymmetric knots.

Kerman is a desert town that started to establish the first weaving ateliers as early as the 4th century. The city of Kerman was once one of the most important trading centres for travelling merchants from or to India. Today, rug weaving is still a central part of Kerman's culture.

The dominant colour of Kerman rugs is usually vivid red, which unleashes its full power in combination with tones such as beige. In addition, there is often a medallion in the centre of the rugs, which is framed by playful floral patterns and in this way breathes colourful life into the rug. The pile is made of high-quality sheep's wool, while the warp and weft are usually made of cotton. In terms of knotting density, Kerman carpets are in the middle range compared to other Persian rugs.
